What “Delights” You?

The world we live in is full of “things” to please us. As fallen humans, we are drawn to pleasure. Webster’s dictionary defines delight as “to give great joy or pleasure to”. What delights you? What brings you great joy? Is it your job? Your home? Your car? Other material possessions? Your spouse or that special someone in your life? Is it your children? What delights you?

Psalm 37:4 reads, “delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart”. Is the Lord your delight? Does He bring you great joy? According to this scripture, if God is first in your life, above all else; if He is the King (ruler, authority) in your life; if He is your Master (boss); if He is your all and all; if He is the source of your joy and brings you delight, then He will give you the desires of your heart. This doesn’t mean whatever you want He will provide. No, our God is not Burger King and you can’t “have it your way”. What this does mean is that when God is your delight and the King and Lord of your life, you will only desire what He desires for you. This delight is different from what the world teaches us. We aren’t used to surrendering control of our wants, desires, basically our lives, to someone else, let alone God. However, when we do, when we DELIGHT in Him, we realize that we have all that we need and our pleasure is in Him!

“WHAT ARE YOU ANXIOUS ABOUT?”

“DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN EVERY SITUATION, BY PRAYER AND PETITION, WITH THANKSGIVING, PRESENT YOUR REQUESTS TO GOD. AND THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS.”

Philippians 4:6-7

New International Version

“Don’t be anxious”; “stop worrying”; “just pray about it”; “have faith”. Has anyone ever quoted these little “pick me ups” to you while you were in the midst of a trial or tribulation? I have had it said to me numerous times and in fact, I say these things to people all of the time. When we hear these things we probably say to the person (or think in our mind), “easier said than done”. I said this to someone recently as they were explaining to me how worrying about a situation caused them to become physically ill. I reminded them, as gently as I could at that moment, that worrying doesn’t change or help anything and that they needed to have more faith. How do you think that went over? You guessed it, not well at all. The person reminded me, in a not so gentle tone, that we are, after all human and it isn’t a matter of faith but a matter of being human.

We are indeed “human”. However, once we have truly accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, His Spirit lives within us and that my dear sisters and brothers, makes us different. That takes our humanity to a whole different level. We can then approach trials, tribulations, situations, circumstances with a totally different mindset because we now have a totally different way of thinking, feeling and believing. We can then say, “I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME” (Phil 4:13).

Next time you are faced with a challenging situation, instead of worrying, panicking, stressing, try praying and trusting that God has your back. Believe me, there is nothing too hard for God. Don’t be anxious. It isn’t just lip service, it is real. Yes, you will go through some tough times, but take comfort in knowing that the peace of God transcends, surpasses, is much greater and better than all your understanding and His peace will guard your heart and mind. Go with God and may the PEACE of God be with you!
